In 1979, a group of interested Cape May Point residents began a discussion of ways to raise funds to support their local fire company. The result was the first running of the Cape May Point Five Mile Run for the benefit of the Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Company. Every year since, on the third Saturday in June, hundreds of runners, spectators and local citizens gather in support of this event. It is, by far, the largest annual event in our tiny Borough, and the Coast Guard Training Center at Cape May regularly sends a company of recruits to participate, adding to the spectacle. Because Cape May Point is a small community, a large percentage of our residents volunteer their time to help make this event possible. As a result of this interaction between runners and local residents, many visitors have called our race the "friendliest" in which they have ever participated.

Consisting of both a two and five mile run, our competition is one of the oldest continually held footraces in southern New Jersey. Over its thirty-plus year history, it has has been very successful and has provided considerable financial support for the Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Company.
